Striking the Right Chord

Group 07 is instrumenting a steel-string acoustic guitar with fretboard, wrist-motion and audio sensing to measure defined playing errors and provide real-time LED-guided feedback.

Investigation question

How accurately and quickly can low-cost fretboard, wrist-motion and audio sensors detect defined fingering, strumming and audio errors during LED-guided chord practice, and does combining the three sensing modes outperform each mode alone?

Intended outcome

The project aims to produce a closed-loop prototype for at least eight open chords and quantify fingering, strumming and audio-verification accuracy, end-to-end latency, noise sensitivity and the benefit of multimodal sensor fusion.

Portrait of Tareeq Govender

Tareeq Govender

I don't do things to be good at them, it's all for the love of the game and the people that inspire me. Aspiring biomedical engineer with information and electrical experience. I want to help build a future that my nephews and nieces can live freely. To invent things that would make the people I hold dear, not just smile, but be happy from the bottom of their hearts. To show them how much they inspire me. No idea is too small, and if something feels impossible I'll try and try again, because failure isn't a setback, it's a lesson, so even when you lose, you win. So long as you're changing one variable each time and your heart's in the right place, then you can't go wrong and you can build the world of tomorrow. While I still got some kick left in me, I won't back down from challenges, because you only lose when you stop trying. So I will make an artificial kidney and I will build a tomorrow where everyone can smile with a pure of heart. A saying I live by is, "Don't believe in yourself, believe in me, believe in the me that believes in you." It means that if you're struggling to believe in yourself, then don't. Believe in me instead. Because I believe in you, so keep believing in me until you learn to be confident in yourself. That's what I tell my loved ones. When I'm not chasing my goals, I'm enjoying the pieces of joy I stole from the people around me. Such as singing and playing guitar, painting, making new tea blends, riding horses, watching anime and perfecting chicken pasta.

Portrait of Adam Symons

Adam Symons

Adam is a final-year BSc Electrical Engineering student at the University of the Witwatersrand, bringing a strong, specialised focus to electronic design. While his academic foundation within this demanding degree is exceptionally rigorous, his defining technical strength remains a highly intuitive, component-level grasp of analogue electronics. He possesses a deep understanding of how physical components interact, allowing him to approach complex engineering challenges with practical insight. Driven by a genuine, off-the-clock curiosity for computer hardware and practical electronics, Adam spends much of his free time building, fixing, and tinkering. This passion comes to life in his home-built lab, a space dedicated entirely to his personal projects. Here, theoretical university concepts from the lecture hall are continuously put to the test through dedicated, hands-on experimentation. For his current Smart Guitar project, Adam deliberately leverages this hardware-first intuition to focus on a rigorous analogue front-end design. To achieve this precision, Adam is highly adept in modelling complex systems and dynamic behaviours using industry-standard tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and SPICE programmes. This skillset allows him to seamlessly bridge the gap between advanced digital simulation and physical realisation. Above all, Adam is fundamentally a lifelong learner. He is driven by an innate eagerness to continually develop new skills and quickly adapt to new technologies as the engineering landscape evolves.
